Is it haram to touch dogs?

im from malaysia, but i live in london, when i asked my friends, they said its not haram...but in malaysia, we were taught that dogs and pigs are najis muhalazah, then i searched in the internet and one guy said that malaysian government has brainwashed us that it is haram. Thanx in advance
