A Farewell To Arms??????

I just got done reading this book and I was wondering if anybody else had a hard time emotionaly relating to either Frederic or Catherine... they just seemed so shallow. I mean don't get me wrong I cried at the end of the book when Catherine died and I could feel Frederic's pain but he had no sympathy for own his dead child. Also throughout the book the characters just seemed emotionaly under developed. What are your thoughts?
