How far should I leap when I apply for colleges?

I have a 3.7 unweighted gpa, and about a 3.9 weighted gpa. I go to a well-known college prep public high school, and am in the top 25% of my grade. I have not taken the SAT yet, (I take it in march), but I scored in the top five percent in the country on the PSAT. I have very good extra curricular activities, (I volunteer at the hospital, I am working on my Girl Scout Gold Award, I run international club at my school). Financial aid is something that is very important, there are many schools I would love to go to, if I could afford them. What are some suggestions of schools I should apply to? I think I prefer smaller schools, but I am really open to any size and any location. Thank you.
