In your opinion can America really afford a new "Gas Tax" to appease the environmentalists ?

The question is what are they going to do with the tax? The tax will not reduce global warming. It certainly will be ped on to the consume like all corporate taxes. There is a reason why we have a new record number of Americans on food stamps (40 million). America is getting poorer, thanks to the direction of socialism that has been introduced over the last 40 years.
